Pataky was born in Madrid, Spain, the daughter of José Francisco Lafuente, a Spanish biochemist, and Cristina Pataky Medianu, a publicist of Hungarian and Romanian ancestry. Pataky attended the Universidad de San Pablo CEU and studied journalism. During this time, Pataky also enrolled in acting classes.
In addition to Spanish, she is fluent in English, Romanian, Italian, and French.
Elsa is married to actor Chris Hemsworth. They made their relationship public at the opening Gala and “Unmasking” for the Resnick Pavilion at LACMA in Los Angeles on 25 September 2010.
